King Edward VI School, Five Ways, a specialist Humanities and Science College, is an 11-18, co-educational, grammar school and part of the family of schools which comprises the King Edward VI Foundation in Birmingham. The school is situated in the south west of the city, at Bartley Green
The School received a second successive outstanding OfSTED Report in November, 2008. In September 2003, the School completed the move towards full co-educational status, making it the only mixed non-fee paying Grammar School in the West Midlands. There is an intake of 150 eleven year old pupils per year on the basis of performance in the entrance examination set by the King Edward Foundation and the total school roll is 1200, with around 400 in the Sixth Form. In recent years, the entry has been many times oversubscribed and the school draws pupils from a wide geographical area. The School is Voluntary Aided and in addition benefits from support from the King Edward VI Foundation.
King Edward VI School is innovative and very high achieving, having adopted the AQA Baccalaureate for A Level students and hoping to offer the IB from September2011. The School has been designated a HPSS, has IiP, International Status, Sportsmark and Artsmark (silver) award. King Edwards has links with schools in the USA, China, Africa, India, New Zealand and Australia - Five Ways on Five Continents. Recent developments at the School include the new Physics Factory and Sixth Form Centre.

David has been Head of King Edward VI Five Ways School since 2003 and prior to that was Head for six years at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys in Cheshire (Trafford). As well as degrees in History and Politics, David has an MSc in Educational Management. Throughout his career he has had a special interest in CPD and Post-16 issues, and he was an of A level General Studies examiner for twenty years. During his tenure at Five Ways, he has overseen considerable innovative change and development, which has resulted in the schools continued success including two consecutive outstanding OfSTED reports. |
Deputy Head - Richard Fox
Richard has worked at King Edwards Five Ways for over thirty years, much of that time on the Leadership Team. He has held a wide range of responsibilities, including Head of English and Head of Pupil Development and currently is responsible for School Improvement/Development Planning and developed a planning cycle and consultation process that involves all stakeholders. Richard has taken a central role in the development of “student voice”, and worked extensively on the implications of the remodelling/workload agenda and has a key role in maintaining and supporting the schools many different international links.
Deputy Head - Gail Long
Gail is the Curriculum Deputy with a major input into Learning and Teaching, having been in post since September, 2003 having previously been an Assistant Head at Dartford Grammar School for Girls. Gails professional interests include curriculum history and evolution and this was her focus for her chosen Masters degree, although her focus now is largely on curriculum design and innovation, particularly personalising the curriculum experience for pupils. Gail has had experience of timetabling different qualifications laterally and has introduced IB and Vocational A levels and GNVQ alongside A levels.
The innovations at Five Ways have included AS themes during KS4 and the move to condensing KS3. Past experience with a national assessment group, NAA and NCSL, has increased Gails interest in learning and teaching, running CPD sessions in-house and externally and she has continued to work in this area at Five Ways and in Edge.
Assistant Head - Graham Cooper
Grahams role as Assistant Head Personnel encompasses CPD, ITT, induction of new staff, Performance Management and Investors in People. The main focus of his teacher training role is the G. T. P. (the school is part of the highly successful King Edward Consortium, now a Recommending Body) though in addition to this the school still regularly receive PGCE trainees from Warwick University and Newman University College. Grahams educational interests lie in the area of mentoring trainees and colleagues, together with academic interests related to the teaching of history and politics.
Director of Pupil Development - John Marston
John is Director of Pupil Development (11-16), and has been at the School for twenty-one years and in post since 2003. He oversees the pastoral system in years 7-11, with pastoral leaders for each individual year group.
Assistant Head - Patrick Amieli
As Assistant Head and Director of Specialist Status, Patrick is in charge of developing Specialisms (Humanities and Science) in the school and in the community. Patrick represents the school at local, regional and national SSAT events and regularly attends the meetings of the SSAT West Midlands Regional Forum for Senior Leaders and Humanities Heads Steering Group. Patrick is an experienced Head of Department, and has been involved in Initial Teacher Training with various providers and was part of the first management group of the King Edward Consortium as a professional tutor.
Assistant Head - Alan Taylor
Alan has spent most of the last twenty-five years developing the schools Computer Service and teaching Information Technology. Alan is now the schools Assessment Coordinator and manages the whole-school self-evaluation process.
Assistant Head - Jacqui Cornell
Jacqui is the Director of Sixth Form (Assistant Head) and has had five years experience of leading and managing a highly academic Sixth Form in two different selective schools. Within that she has worked on developing management structures, monitoring and target setting, PSE curricula and enrichment opportunities. Prior to this, Jacqui led two History Departments, one in an 11-18 R C High School and the other an 11-18 comprehensive
