Four Dwellings High School, Specialist Science College for Edgbaston, is an 11-16 school, with some 16+ provision, situated in the western fringes of Birmingham and predominantly serves the sprawling estates that emerged in Birmingham in the decades after the Second World War.
The local catchment area, including the North Woodgate Valley, Welsh House Farm and Quinton, contains some of the most socio-economically deprived neighbourhoods in the West Midlands. The school is renowned for its innovative and enterprising approaches to working in these challenging circumstances under the Headship of Bernie Smith.
The school places much emphasis on engaging with the community and local businesses and on building partnerships with a diversity of partners and the innovative Quinzone Centre which offers vocational and community based learning and opportunities.
The schools record of working towards social cohesion and inclusion is widely applauded, its work with pupils acknowledged and its excellence in curriculum work has been recognised by the QCA.
"This is a good school that provides outstanding care, guidance and support for its pupils. The leadership of the headteacher is inspirational and visionary and has been recognised through the recent West Midlands ‘Headteacher of the Year award"
