Shenley Academy

Aspirations are high at Shenley Academy. It achieved the desirable Academy status to become one of Birmingham’s first academies, with specialisms in Science and Performing Arts. The academy has completed its first very successful year, building on the progress made by its predecessor school, described by OFSTED as "a 'good' school with an outstanding capacity to improve further' (OFSTED Feb. 2009). HMI recently described it as

Shenley Academy opened in September 2009 in existing buildings. Over the next year, a brand new multi million pound, state of the art building will be created on the academy’s 37 acre site in Northfield. A sports complex with world class facilities is planned for an even earlier opening. At Shenley Academy, high expectations, small teaching groups, individual support and careful tracking of progress ensure pupils meet and often exceed their potential. There are five colleges, each a mini school with very small mixed age tutor groups, which means that tutors quickly get to know pupils as individuals, guiding their progress and their development.  Personal development is crucial.

Large numbers of pupils choose to stay on into the successful Sixth Form Centre. Here too, the emphasis is upon personal growth and success, which OFSTED described as 'Outstanding'. Students take an active role in the running of the Sixth Form and support the rest of the school. Many become involved in leadership courses, others offer mentoring or reading support for younger pupils. Most sixth formers go on to university. Academic success and preparation for working life are emphasised.
As Principal Ruth Harker says, "Our motto 'inspire, aspire and achieve' underpins all we do."
