LEADING CHANGE TOWARDS SUCCESS IN CHALLENGING CIRCUMSTANCES - LESSONS FROM THE FRONT LINE, OCTOBER 7

A one day course led by three Headteachers:

Ruth, Bernie and Tony all have extensive experience of working successfully in schools which are in challenging circumstances, including turning around schools in a national challenge and special measures context and working in some of the most disadvantaged areas of Birmingham (notably those with high proportions of free school meals ie a rate of over 60% and white working class catchment areas). Collectively they have pioneered innovative and successful approaches, and have been part strong leadership groups.

EDGE PARTNERSHIP APPOINTED SSAT'S LEADERSHIP AND INNOVATION HUB

We are delighted to announce our appointment as a Leadership and Innovation Academy hub school for the West Midlands. From September we will be working in the West Midlands Region to provide regionally based professional development for teachers at all stages of their careers. We will work to provide more personalised opportunities for leadership development in our area and localised support for succession planning. In doing so, we will reduce the impact of time out of school and travel costs, making CPD accessible to more schools and more teachers.

The programmes and events we will offer will be designed and delivered by leading headteachers and practitioners in the region. We will work with local schools who show outstanding practice and teachers who want to learn from the latest educational developments. This model of working has been successfully trialed in the South West, Yorkshire and the Humber and Eastern regions. Since September, 150 teachers and 70 schools have benefited from LIA's new regional way of working and we hope that in 2010-11 that this number will raise considerably.

The main SSAT contact at The Edge Partnership of Schools in Birmingham will be Duncan Chamberlain, the new Leadership and Innovation Academy Coordinator (duncan.chamberlain@edgepartnership.org . Duncan is the Managing Director of our charitable wing, and a former Assistant Headteacher and A Level Principal Examiner.

EDGE PARTNERSHIP DELIVERS TWO MORE CPD TRAINING DAYS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION AND PARTNERSHIP WORKING

The Edge Partnership was delighted to deliver two very well received CPD sessions either side of the Easter break, 2010. The Partnership Working course was delivered at King Edward VI Five Ways School and led by the Headmaster of the hosts, David Wheeldon and Headteacher of Lordswood Girls School and Sixth Form Centre, Jane Gotschel. The course focussed on the advantages of partnership working and the mechanics of forming and operating a partnership, based on our experience of a ten school partnership. The Special Education course was hosted by the Headteacher of Hunters Hill Technology College, Ken Lewis, who worked fellow Headteachers Rosemary Adams (Baskerville School) and Jim Kane (Victoria School). The main focus of the day, which included school visits, was leadership in Special Education.

EDGE PARTNERSHIP VISITED BY NATIONAL STRATEGIES

The Edge Partnership of Schools was delighted to host Chris Williams and Martyn Pendergast of National Strategies. Chris and Martyn visited Turves Green Boys School, Northfield, where they were hosted by Headteacher, Tony Quinn. The visit was to investigate what approaches and strategies work with disadvantaged white working class boys, and was clearly very successful. Tony Quinn is a new Headteacher, who is clearly making an impact in his school, which is located on the edge of Birmingham, close to the former Rover plant at Longbridge.
